In our second session, we addressed a text that was laid out in a historical undertaking: to recognize that architecturally, the problem of space is quite new.  And it is new in two ways. First, space as a specific project did not exist until the 19th century.  There may be many reasons for this, one of which was the origin of the city and the middle class as we know it.  The city we live in today was invented in the 19th century.  As was the middle class.  Spectacle and leisure.  Formerly the province of the aristocracy.  Compare: The image above by Caillebotte is a new perception of the city that begins with Paris.  And we still engage that experience today.  It is a standard for design.  A friction-less city.
